The multiple world youth powerlifting champion left for Syria last week at the invitation of the country's first lady. During their meeting, Naumova handed Assad a watch, a present for the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

The 16-year-old also met with the Supreme Mufti of Syria, Sheikh Ahmad Badr al-Din Hassoun and the President of the National Olympic Committee General Muwaffaq Juma. There were also meetings with local students, athletes and female members of Syria's Special Forces, according to her Facebook.

Before her visit to Syria, Maryana was in eastern Ukraine on a humanitarian mission from August 30 to September 5, 2015. She used her trip to also give several classes for schoolchildren on powerlifting and workout routines.
